Your Child’s Holiday Oral Health

Posted .

Holidays can be stressful. It’s easy to give up on helping your kids with oral hygiene and general mouth health during such a busy time. But don’t let it slide! Adding an emergency dental visit to your holiday plans is not a fun idea for anyone. Here are some tips to make sure your kids’ smiles stay healthy and happy this holiday season.

If your child has a hard time wanting to brush their teeth for a full 2 minutes:

–Try setting a timer and offering a non-food reward for every week they brush their teeth twice a day for two minutes.

— Use it as family time–brushing teeth together can get you an extra 3.5 hours of one-on-one time with your child before the end of 2017.

–Turn on your favorite holiday music and jam while you brush! Before you know it, the two minutes are up. Adult supervision is probably wise in this case.

If your children tend to snack on sugary treats:

–Make sure sugary treats are accompanied by a large glass of plain or fluoridated water, to help clean the sugar away from teeth.

–Give treats all at once rather than throughout the day (in small portion sizes, of course). This allows the child to brush their teeth after eating a sugary snack without immediately introducing more sugar into their mouth.
